History of Plastic Surgery in Turkiye

Turkiye has a strong medical and surgical tradition dating back to ancient times. In the historic Turkish literature, various plastic surgery applications are described with drawings in the first printed work of Serafettin Sabuncuoglu (1385-1468 AD) named Imperial Surgery. These are detailed studies on gynecomastia, entropion, ectropion symblepharon and maxillofacial surgery applications.

Modern plastic surgery in Turkiye may be dated back to Dr. Halit Ziya Konuralp, who performed numerous plastic surgery procedures in the 1930s. He later established the plastic surgery unit at Istanbul University in 1950.

When the stages of plastic and reconstructive surgery from the beginning to the present are examined chronologically, it is seen that Turkish plastic surgery practices date back to very old times. As in all countries of the world, the development of plastic surgery in Turkiye took place especially after World War II, after two major world wars. After the Turkish Plastic Surgery Association (TPCD) was officially established in 1961, plastic surgery practices in Turkiye ceased to be sporadic and became systematic studies. The history of Turkish Plastic Surgery will be examined in the form of developments before and after the establishment of TPCD.

Necdet Albay was sent to Germany in 1936 to establish a maxillofacial surgery department upon his return in the Gülhane Military Medical Academy, indicating that the first systematic studies in training hospitals began in the 1930s. He was appointed as the head of Maxillofacial Surgery Department in 1941.

In 1942, Cihat Borcbakan was appointed as the assistant head of the same department. Cihat Borcbakan was sent to the USA for 2 years in 1951, became the Director of Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery unit with the title of professor in 1957, and continued in this position until 1965. Later he worked as faculty at Ankara University Medical School.

In addition to the activities observed in training hospitals during this period, the presence of freelancers is also remarkable. It is known that Cafer Tayyar Kankat performed nose and breast surgeries in his clinic in Istanbul in the 1940s, explained them in detail in his own journal ''Plastic Reparative and Esthetic Surgery'' and presented a report titled ''Penile Cartilage Graft in Impotence'' at a surgery congress held in Istanbul in 1946. In later years, Atilla Oymak and Erdoğan Konuk, who made great efforts and contributions to the establishment of our association, exhibited the successful work of the freelancers.

The first systematic studies that started in training hospitals between 1940-1945 began to become apparent and mature in the 1950s at the Gulhane Military Medical Academy in Ankara and the Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul. In 1953, the Plastic Surgery Clinic was established in the Ministry of Health Ankara Numune Hospital under the leadership of Sekür Okten.

With the establishment of TSPRAS in 1961, it became easier to establish new departments in a more organized and independent manner and scientific studies gained momentum.

Those interested in various subjects of maxillofacial surgery, general surgeons, ENT specialists and oral surgeons working on this subject decided to establish an association in 1960 in order to help develop this subject, exchange information within the country and abroad and hold scientific meetings.

In 1961, the "Turkish Plastic Surgery Association" was officially established by fifteen surgeons (Cihat Borcbakan, Hilmi Gursel, Halit Ziya Konuralp, Sekür Okten, Necdet Albay, Sekip Akpınar, Mustafa Engin, Sefa Karatay, Erdoğan Konuk, Atilla Oymak, Ali Uras, Rıfat Yetkin, Husnü Goksel, Muhittin Ulker, Emin Burat).

The association operated in the form of local meetings until 1965, then it was decided that it was time to organize a congress and the first national congress was held on June 23, 1968 at the Ankara Hotel under the chairmanship of Cihat Borcbakan. 49 scientific papers and 1 film screening were presented at this congress. National Congresses were then held regularly every two years until 1990 in various cities of Anatolia that had Plastic Surgery Centers, and single-subject symposiums were organized in the years between. After 1990, one congress and one winter symposium were implemented every year. Foreign guests from abroad attended the Congress held in Izmir for the first time in 1974. The first international plastic surgery Congress organized by our country was held in Istanbul.

Following the decision to change the name of our association to the "Turkish Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (TSPRAS)", which was becoming widespread all over the world, at our Ordinary General Assembly meeting held in Ankara in 1998, the official initiatives were completed and the name of our association was changed to the "Turkish Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons".
